SYMMPI1 event using VMWARE Server

July 27, 2009 by jer0dh

Had someone report that a Windows 2003 server crashes about every 1 to 2 weeks.  I went on and found the following event in the System Event Log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: symmpi
Event Category: None
Event ID: 9
Date:  7/8/2009
Time:  8:04:05 AM
User:  N/A
Computer: TTTTT
Description:
The device, DeviceScsisymmpi1, did not respond within the timeout period.

Found that this was a virtual machine running on another Windows 2003 server as the host. Using VMware 2.0.

Researched and found the following registry key helpful in this environment since saving to the virtual disk can sometimes require a longer timeout value.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesDisk]
"TimeOutValue"=dword:0000003c

After a restart, this event has not reoccurred in 2 weeks. No crashes either.
