RE: Normal.dot caused serious error the last time it opened

June 5, 2009 by jer0dh

My initial fix would be to rename the Normal.dot and let Word recreate it…But this will remove any toolbar customizations.
Exit Word
Go to My Computer
Go to c: drive
drill down to C:Documents and SettingstztApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates (You may have to go to Tools|Folder Options| View Tab | Show hidden files and folders to see the Appication folder)
Rename the Normal.dot to something else.
Start Word and that should recreate the Normal.dot.

I see that you are using Hummingbird DM. Do you have an issue with Normal.Dot getting too large very often? I have users that keep having this issue, where it goes from 42k to 2meg+ Any thoughts? I am stumped trying to find a solution.

No, not so far. We are using Office 2003. The problem is so many things access the Normal.dot. I think the first thing I would do is check all the startup items in the Office Startup folders (under program files and under user profile) and see if you could remove them temporarily to see if the Normal still grows after they are gone. If not, then put these items back one at a time to figure out which one is doing it. Check the OpenText knowledgebase?
